Artist's Bio

Yukhym Spyrydonovych Mykhailiv was born in the village of Oleshky, southern Ukraine in 1885. Prominent Ukrainian artist-painter. After completing his artistic education in Moscow, Mykhailiv took residence in Kyiv. Here he was an active participant in Ukrainian cultural life, teaching art at various schools, holding leading positions in a number of civic and artistic organizations. Most of Mykhailiv’s important paintings are pastels, executed in a symbolistic manner, and often permeated with Ukrainian national spirit. In 1934, at the height of Stalin’s terror, Mykhailiv was exiled to northern Russia, where he died in Gulag camp in 1935.
